Briefly, what are you going to do?

VITAS strives to provide support to their sister hospice, Gonja Lutheran Hospital and Palliative Care of Gonja Bombo, located in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. This team of amazing end of life care providers has faced near-insurmountable obstacles, caring for more than 350 patients at a time, including people with HIV/AIDS, cancer, stroke and other terminal illnesses. An indomitable spirit exudes from this hospice and their community! They are doing a great job and continue to make strides in every area of service. But they need everything: all the basics, plus.

Who are you?

In partnership with FHSSA, the VITAS Waterbury Program, which serves terminally ill patients and families in New Haven county and surrounding communities, needs help throughout the year to support Gonja Lutheran Hospital. Since 2009, our goal has been to bring every terminally ill person in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in the context of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, quality, affordable and culturally sensitive palliative care.

Tell me more about your campaign.

Hospice providers in Africa offer much more than pain and symptom management. They provide supplemental nutrition. They teach caregivers how to provide personal care to patients. They educate the community on HIV/AIDS prevention and myths. They help care for the many orphans and they offer psychosocial and spiritual support and bereavement counseling to those in need of it.
